dye for glory mosaic

Those gorgeous yarns (201 entries total!) are the work of the 81 dyers who have entered the Sock Summit Dye For Glory contest! We’re pleased to announce that voting is now open to all Ravelers!

voting

Voting is easy! Just go to www.ravelry.com/socksummit and click on a category to see all the colorways that have been submitted in that category. (The yarns come up in a different order for each voter, so we’re all seeing the colorways randomly and there is no advantage to being at the top.) Look at the pretty pictures, read about what inspired the dyer, and select your favorite by clicking the “vote for this yarn” checkbox. You’ll see a green banner showing your vote at the top of the yarn, and a little green arrow will show by the category name, to show that you voted in that category.

Voting is open until August 1st, 11:59 pm Eastern time. If you like yarn (and we’re guessing you just might), take a moment to check out these submissions and vote for your favorite! We think that every single submission deserves a little glory.

p.s. To the 660 eager people who found the voting link early and have already cast their votes - please go back and take a moment to be sure that all of your votes are still the way you want them - a few entries were moved to different categories or removed. Thanks!

  16. Nancy Says:

I kept track of my votes, and since I’ve selected multiple yarns from a few vendors, and think I found some new sock yarns to try!

It’ll be interesting to see if other Ravelers agree with my choices.

Too bad I can’t attend the Sock Summit!

  17. Linda Says:

Love the colors!!!!! It was hard to choose just one winner from each category! I want them all!

Is there a way to see a running tally of who’s winning? Or could that influence ravelers who haven’t voted yet?

  18. Kathy Lao Says:

    What beautiful yarns!!!!!

It would have been helpful if those who had yarn with short repeats, long repeats, pooling, etc. would have knitted samples to show how thier yarn actually pooled, or repeated. It is hard to tell on the skein.

  19. Kristie Says:

Hats off to the Dyers… it was definitely hard to vote, such beautiful yarn!

  20. Genevieve Says:

    1. I had so much fun voting and the yarn was all gorgeous!
    2. I am not sad I am not going to the summit
    3. I need to knit more socks!

Thanks to the organizers & dyers! Good Luck!

  21. Genevieve Says:

and by not sad I meant sad!

  22. Barbara @ the Jersey Shore Says:

OMG……. such beautiful yarns! Really had a hard time choosing. Now, my very favorite colorway is………. (did you really expect ME to choose just one???) So sorry I can’t do a cross-country trip for SS09… I do hope there are MANY pics posted for those SS09-Wannabees like me.

  23. JC Says:

It was nice to see that some submitters provided swatches to really see the colors!

  24. Abbey Says:

Excuse me, but I would like to inform you that the login page is not loading in both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. It either does not load or says that the webpage is not available.
    Thank you.

  25. Novajoy Says:

There should be specific criteria for photographing contest skeins to make visual voting more fair. I felt they were not represented equally. However, I did love to view the glorious results of our talented artists and dream in color for future projects.

    What a glorious celebration indeed!
    A.

  26. ravelrouser Says:

The hand painted category was killer! They were all awesome. Most of these categories should have multiple winners.

Can’t wait for the yarns to be available to the poor schmucks who won’t be at the summit.

  27. Bobbi Daniels Says:

As a dyer in the contest and a voter, when you announce the winners PLEEEASE put all the vote tallies for all the yarns on the site, not just name a winner. I would be very much interested to see any trends among the votes, whether yarns coming in behind the winning yarn were similar colors, etc. This information would be helpful to all the artists and LYS owners trying to stock what their knitters want. What can I say? I had 20 years in marketing before I ever sold a skein of yarn and I just think that way. Know it or not you are compiling great market research here so please share!

  28. Susan Tucker Says:

I stayed up past my bedtime Thursday night, casting my votes. There were so many beautiful yarns, and some difficult choices. I wish you had virtual smooshing! It was a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to see the results.
For future contests, I would encourage ALL of the dyers to submit photos of their yarn(s) knitted up, as well as in the skein.

  29. Sharon Says:

Voting is great fun. Thank you for letting us who are unable to attend enjoy the fun. The swatches are a wonderful idea. Thank you to the vendors who let us purchase online!!!!!

  30. Karen Says:

The best part of this is that I’ve found many new great sources of yarn, most of which I’d never even heard of before. Added lots to my faves today. Thank you!

  31. Greeneyes (Laura) Says:

Wow, what a treat for the eyes……such beautiful colors and so many choices! I had trouble picking just ONE, particularly in the Kettled and Watercolor categories. Just wish I could be there to fondle them in person, but I’ll definitely buy some of these lovely yarns.

  32. Helen Says:

A great blast of color. Can’t wait to see some of them in the flesh, er I mean the wool.

  33. Lauraks Says:

Add me to the list of those wishing to see samples. EVERY yarn looked gorgeous, even those in not my favorite colors. The work, every single skein is amazingly lovely.

I’ve bought quite a few hanks and skeins thinking they’d be great as a sock, knitted them, and thought “Ugh.” If all you have time to knit up is a bit of k2p2 cuff with st st to follow, great! It’s better than nothing and gives us voters a lot more to see.

  34. Julie Says:

Yep, I agree with Lauraks - seeing a knitted sample really helped. All the yarns are gorgeous but I voted based not on the color alone but also on what I could see myself actually knitting. In a few cases, the tie-breaker came down to whether or not there was a picture of a knitted swatch.

  35. icicle Says:

Wow, I just clicked on my last vote — and I really, really would love to see all my selections grouped together. I think it would be like seeing the results of a personality test, but in colors.

  36. karenbess Says:

Took me a couple of days to finish voting but that was total fun!

In a few categories my choice was quite simple because I fell in absolute love with certain yarns but in other categories I had to narrow it down to a few choices - walk away and come back to review again before making my final choice. I think the dyer descriptions helped me make a decision a little but ultimately it was all in the colours and their combinations which I based my voting on.

I’m trying really hard to hold off on the pre-ordering temptation. I will definitely check out those booths though when I’m there. I appreciate seeing samples beforehand so I know which booths I don’t want to miss!

  37. Betty Says:

All of the colorways are absolutely beautiful, but I think It would be helpful if you could show a knitted sample along with the colorway. Just a thought.
Thanks though, this is a tasty treat to see all these unique colorways - I’m drooling.

  38. Lennu Says:

Music is colours, colours is yarn, yarn is…
So beautiful colours, each of hands, minds. Thank You, You are all special!!

  39. Janet Says:

Great work! Lots of fun voting.
I found the knit sample swatches shown in some of the photo sets helpful. I often love the colors but cannot image how the colors blend or flow. Thanks Rav for setting this up and making it so easy to vote!

  40. Bunnydozer Says:

Those of us who have Flickr blocked at work can’t see all of the yarn’s full size images. That may give the non-flickr people an unfair advantage.

    Thanks!

  41. Handwerks (Laura) Says:

Thank you so much for hosting this fun contest. I’m a small (just me) indie dyer and I had so much fun coming up with a colorway. I really appreciate having the opportunity to enter as well as see the work of other dyers. I only wish I could see all the skeins in person!

  42. Susan Says:

Great fun looking through all of these beautiful yarns. Several of us here in CT just had a day of yarn dying fun and I think I have the bug. Would love to see some tutorials and additional dying technique information here on Ravelry in the future. I’m itching to learn more about this fun and beautiful process!

  43. Kate O Says:

Just have to say thank you Ravelry. I found so many beautiful yarns I want to try. And I think this was the absolute best way to promote the art of dying. Thank you, thank you!

  44. Linda Lofdahl Says:
