Want to work for Ravelry? Community Support position available!
March 20th, 2009

Hi Ravelry! Erica the Email Fairy is moving on, and Ravelry is looking for a new team member! This is a part-time (~20 hours per week), work-at-home position with flexible hours, and a definite possibility of growth with the company over time. :) We are looking for someone tech-savvy, friendly, and positive who is very familiar with the Ravelry site and community.
essential responsibilities include:
- Provide the first line of helpful support to all emails coming in via our contact-us page, the shopping@ravelry.com, and the advertising@ravelry.com email addresses (and alerting the rest of the staff to potentially important issues that come in). Topics in these emails can cover anything under the sun - designer/yarnie issues, confidential forum issues, happy people, Ravelry mini-mart questions, advertiser help, and more!
- Hook up designers, yarnies, and design teams with their Ravelry profiles and answering basic questions or directing to helpful on-Ravelry resources as needed.
- Assist users with Ravelry invitation issues.
- Provide help as needed on the Ravelry “work” forums: For the Love of Ravelry, Help!, Ravelry Shopkeepers, Ravelry Editors, Advertisers’ Caboodle.
- Assist Jess and Mary-Heather with ad approvals (image feedback, checking groups for competitors, etc.).
- Must be familiar with Ravelry’s site, vision, and tone!
- Must be able to stay motivated, level-headed, and work both independently as a self-starter on your own tasks, and as a part of our tightly-knit (har) team.
- Ownership of cute dog not required.
To apply for this position:
Please email jobs@ravelry.com with your resume and an email telling us more about your experience and why you are interested in the job. Please include your Ravelry username! We will need to receive it by Friday, March 27. You don’t need to write a formal cover letter… heck, you can make a video, upload it to the internet somewhere, and send us the link. :) Whatever works!
We do have some questions we would like you to answer:
1) Why do you want to work for Ravelry?
2) What qualities, technical experience (computer and crafty!) and skills could you bring to our little team?
3) If you were a yarn-producing fiber, what would you be and why?
Go Team Rav!
p.s. if you have questions about this position, please email jobs@ravelry.com. Thank you! :)
Updated Monday, March 23 - Frequently Asked Questions!
Can you apply for this position if you live outside of the United States?
- Sure! International applicants - please go ahead and apply, and thank you for your interest! We are checking out all the labor law and employment tax details we would need when it comes to hiring a non-US-based person, but we are open to the possibility! :)
How old do you have to be?
- You must be 18 years old to apply.
What do you mean by “tech-savvy?”
- You don’t need to be a computer programmer to apply by any means - Casey does all the code here. :) You should be very familiar with Ravelry and the way the site works; we will help get you up to speed, of course, but familiarity with The List, the Ravelry wiki, our Community Guidelines, and how to “work” the technical things on the site (uploading photos, linking blog posts, etc.) is important. You should be very internet-savvy in general. The customer support emails are handled through a web-based email system, and you will often be helping users with very limited computer experience with a very wide variety of tasks, so proficiency with basic computer tasks (in both Mac and PC operating systems) is needed.
Is this position paid?
- Yes! This position is paid an hourly wage and requires about 20 hours a week. Pay is competitive with customer service and administrative jobs in the Boston area.
March 20th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Wow, I guess you will receive lots of resume for this position, too bad that I dont’ think I am qualified for this. But I hope you will find a good one soon! :)
March 20th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Working for Ravelry would be so awesome! I see that it’s part-time…what kind of hours? Is this something that could be done after normal business hours?
March 20th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Man…I wish I could do this. I’m so afraid that I’m under qualified. Still gonna try!! Because if I don’t try, I’ll never know, now will I?
March 20th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Wow, talk about dream come true! I hope I’m qualified. What a stroke of luck I’ve been looking for something part time.
I hope ya’ll find someone who is the perfect fit for the Ravelry family.
March 20th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Hmm.. would it matter if I were on the opposite side of the world in a totally different time zone?
March 20th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Wow. That would be awesome! But I assume you would have to be over eighteen…
March 20th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
So not fair. Some lucky person will get paid to spend hours on (and behind the public view) Ravelry. Dang, wish it could be me. Alas I have the crafty, just not the techie skillz. :) Good luck in your hunt.
March 20th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
Wow, what a great opportunity! I sent in an email and my CV, and now I’m crossing my fingers. :D I hope you guys find someone super awesome!
March 20th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Oh! I think my prayers have been answered! Too bad I have been a stay-at-home mom for the past 9 1/2 years and don’t have a current resume.
March 20th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Oooooh(jealous). I wish I could afford to to to work part-time, because this would be (awesome).
March 20th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
that should have read *to GO to work part-time*. d’oh!
March 20th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Seriously?! Working for ravelry would be a dream! I’m definitely applying. :) :fingers crossed:
March 20th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
I would love to know what kind of tech requirements you need to have.
March 20th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
I’d love it! I will submit some sort of resume. Now I can justify the time spent on Ravelry.
Right?
March 20th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
I feel like the new person will get check Mary-Heather’s thyroid as a requirement of the job, as per the photo. I might be up for the challenge, but this was not mentioned in the essential responsibilities.
March 20th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
I wish I were more tech savvy, I think you guys and Ravelry are the best, I am great at finding answers though. I would like to know more about the skills, curiosity.
I am very crafty, adept in knitting, crochet, embroidery as well as able to spin a bit of fiber now and then. I am superwash merino, I wash up and blend well.
March 20th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
Do you have to be in the Boston area? What kind of techy qualifications are needed? And must one be an expert in all forms of yarnyness? I crochet and have knit socks and lace shawls, but never a sweater. I think I might be interested. Carol AKA GrizzlyBear
March 20th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Is it fair to assume, considering work visas and whatnot, that you need to be a US citizen in order to apply?
March 20th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Wow, somebody is going to be very luck to join the Ravelry team (I wish it were me but I already work full time). Good luck recruiting!
March 20th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
I sent an email out. I know with this talented pool of people, you will find someone great! (I just hope I am considered!) Thanks again!
March 20th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
hmmm. you lost me at “friendly and positive.” heh.
good luck kids! whoever you pick has some kick ass shoes to fill.
March 20th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
Amen maryse :)
March 20th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Sweeeeet!!!
March 20th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
I already sent mine off.
I so would not want to have to wade through the million talented people that apply.
March 20th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
Wow! It’s like a dream come true. Work for Ravelry. hmmmm. But I am also assuming one would have to be a US citizen.
March 20th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Oooh! Oh, man! I sooo want to apply for this. I did Help Desk work for over two years so I’m used to answering any question under the sun! But I have a feeling that you want someone who can respond during daylight hours and I just can’t give up the day job, even for Ravelry. :-(
March 20th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
I wish you all the very best success finding someone. Alas, it won’t be me :( I’m not near qualified. A dream come true, though, for the lucky one :D
March 20th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
Need to know what kind of techy business before I clutter your desk with another unwanted resume. I’ve worked with computers since Al Gore invented them, but as far as prob fixing, ah no. I did replace my dead mouse yesterday (after giving it mouth to mouth). The other requirements I have covered.
Thanks! Good luck!
March 20th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Best of luck to all the applicants. Ravelry has some wonderful people and I’m sure there are plenty here who are qualified for the position. I’ll be excited to meet the newest member whenever he or she is revealed :)
March 21st, 2009 at 1:01 am
How exciting! I hope I hear back soon, good luck everyone else who is applying!
March 21st, 2009 at 2:57 am
Interesting…good luck to everyone who submits an application.
March 21st, 2009 at 5:45 am
All the best to applicants. I have a similar job and love it.

All the best to applicants. I have a similar job and love it.
Good luck to Erica.
March 21st, 2009 at 5:52 am
All the best to applicants. I have a similar job and love it.
Thank-you and good luck to Erica.
March 21st, 2009 at 5:58 am
I wish I could apply , but I am not a US citizen nor have a work permit. Please let me know if I can apply.
March 21st, 2009 at 7:30 am
Wow…exciting to say the least and a dream come true to work for a company doing what you love best. I’ve applied and wish the best of luck to everyone else who has applied.
March 21st, 2009 at 7:57 am
Best wishes to Erica the Email Fairy as she embarks on a new adventure. :)
March 21st, 2009 at 8:13 am
Well- the perfect job for me- but does it matter that I’m in Scotland,UK? I was hoping as it was onlinethat the work would be online too? Big thrills!
March 21st, 2009 at 10:06 am
My dream job!!!!!
Unfortunately, I’m not qualified. Lucky is the person who lands this position.

March 21st, 2009 at 10:27 am
While I could handle the positive amd friendly part, and I’m definitely available during the day, I couldn’t do the techie part, unless it’s very basic, so I won’t clutter up your email box with another application. Best of luck to all the applicants!
March 21st, 2009 at 10:29 am
Too bad I’m not very qualified, otherwise I’d totally apply. :( Oh well.

March 21st, 2009 at 10:34 am
Wait a minute, I do have some qualifications…why not?!
:D

March 21st, 2009 at 10:45 am
Oh, if only my kids were just a couple years older… and my knitting a bit more advanced… This would be perfect for a webmaniac, former marketing guru, former tech support liason like me.
March 21st, 2009 at 11:50 am
Ah! This would be the best job ever! I think there are a thousand people more qualified for this job than me, but it doesn’t hurt to try :) I already spend most of my time hanging in here, so why not do it as a job? :D
March 21st, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Ooh, this could be fun… But I’m already looking for a job, so I don’t know if I’d have time for something like this… Plus, being a kid (16) might pose a problem.
March 21st, 2009 at 1:15 pm
So…I’m wondering just how tech savvy one needs to be for this position? I may not know everything about everything, but I can certainly rub two sticks together. ;)
March 21st, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Where did you get that shirt Casey? I need one so I can feel less lonely in my Perl-dominated office.
March 21st, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Wow, I’ve been looking all over for an opportunity like this!
I’m so applying. I’m sure there’s a ton of people vying for a great position like this,
but I’ve got to try! No harm in that.
Good luck to all applicants! This will be wonderful for someone special!
March 21st, 2009 at 7:11 pm
omg, dream job, might just have to go for it. lots of good questions in the comments as well……

March 21st, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Good luck to Erica, and good luck to the three sifting the applications!
March 21st, 2009 at 9:44 pm
Best of Luck to Erica–you will be missed.
Thanks for posting the openning for all to see also!
Good luck all!
March 22nd, 2009 at 4:02 am
If this is any indication of what kind of picks you will have for this one job, then you will be flooded with some real talent. Im a newbie to ravelry and have linked my way across this amazing site with much fasination. Just wanted to say good Luck to you all!
March 22nd, 2009 at 7:43 am
Amazing job opportunity! Wish I qualified . . .
March 22nd, 2009 at 8:18 am
This is the perfect job! Sounds like there will be a lot of competition from wonderful fellow Ravelry-lovers! May the best crafter win, may Erica be happy in her new adventures, and may the Ravelry team (who we all love so much) find the best fit for the job!
March 22nd, 2009 at 8:31 am
between mum and me and my boyfriend no probs mum-long time knitter, bf techie, me crafter / good at design dealing with people oh and knitter but i dont htink your after a 3 person team lol
March 22nd, 2009 at 8:38 am
Ooooooooooooooh!
March 22nd, 2009 at 11:02 am
Is it safe to assume that “part-time (~20 hours per week), work-at-home position with flexible hours” means I’d be able to work around my 8-5, Monday through Friday job and not have to move to another state?
March 22nd, 2009 at 11:27 am
Are you going to post (or get back to people individually, which seems unlikely) about specifics of what ‘tech savvy’ means? I’m pretty knowlegable about computers and tech stuff, but I don’t know how advanced your applicant needs to be. I need work-at-home positions because I’m disabled. This would be an ideal job for me because I have tons of administrative and customer service experience. I just need more clarity on the tech issue.
I even have cute dogs, which I think makes me the ideal candidate (see Ravatar).
March 22nd, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Ha!
If you ever need a german office, I will be all yours. Unfortunately I hate knitting, but have two cats, if that´s helpful.
March 22nd, 2009 at 3:16 pm
I am interested too.. but like Tracey Zimmerman, just how tech savvy do you need the person to be?
March 22nd, 2009 at 4:21 pm
I would totally apply to this job if I already had my computer science degree and didn’t have to work 40+ hours a week. *sad* But maybe you’ll be needing someone in a year or two. *hopeful!*
March 22nd, 2009 at 7:01 pm
I bet you’ll get 10,000 applications!
I consider myself very qualified for the position but I already have a full time job as a systems analyst, and with a 2-year contract I can’t break. Dang!!
March 22nd, 2009 at 9:29 pm
This looks like a dream job just for me along with other thousands of who would be wanting it. LOL. I have the time and am into crafts. Can handle a computer well enough but how technically advanced you want is what I dont know.
Regards,
March 22nd, 2009 at 9:38 pm
This is incredibly awesome!!! Hellooo, dream job come true!
I’m definitely applying!
March 22nd, 2009 at 11:39 pm
I will be sending you an app! So exciting!! :)
March 23rd, 2009 at 7:53 am
I’ve applied! I imagine you will get swathes of people applying though.
March 23rd, 2009 at 9:52 am
I wish I had more experience here on ravelry since I would love to apply as well! I am sure there are tones of other people that are more suited than I am at this point!! Good luck finding the right person.
March 23rd, 2009 at 11:06 am
I am already anxious to hear back and I only submitted my resume 3 days ago… too much excitement buzzing through the air around ravelry!!
March 23rd, 2009 at 1:25 pm
I just had to apply. I had to explain to the hubby that it did not entail moving to Boston, although I would have just to work for Ravelry. What would be the chances of getting my dream job? I had one once…second time a charm?
Cora
March 23rd, 2009 at 3:56 pm
ooooohhhh…..
i’m toying with applying especially since my grad school hopes have been dashed (rejected by all schools ~cry~)
lord knows i can do this… i’m constantly having to IT support for my parents and not to tech-savvy friends.
March 23rd, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Would a batch of Cranberry, Oatmeal, Chocolate Chip Cookies help my chances? LOL
March 23rd, 2009 at 7:03 pm
I am soo excited…I already do this sort of thing at my full-time job. I am on ravelry at least 3 hrs a day..I love it here! Good Luck to all who applied. (including me, lol)….
March 23rd, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Wow! What a great excuse to be on Ravelry all day! I’m thinking of a fiber[ous] animal between A-Z. You have 20 guesses… I have one chance to catch your attention.
March 24th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
My email sent at jobs@ravelry bounced. Is there any other way to send in the application.
March 24th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Ahem. I just applied. I wasn’t going to, but everyone in my family was like “why not! you would be great at it!”
So I did, thbbt.
March 24th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
This is such an excellent opportunity! I just applied. Best of luck with your search; I’m sure there will be tons of qualified applicants for such a sweet gig. ;)
March 24th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Hello there! I do live in North Reading, MA (so pretty close to Boston, MA) and have applied for the position.
If you do need any further information, do let me know.
Thanks,
Gia
March 24th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Damn, I wish I could do this… but I’m in grad school, and we aren’t allowed to have jobs outside of our assistantships. They’re trying to make sure they keep us poor and subdued, so we don’t get any ideas- what, life could be better? What’s this, ‘real job’ of which you speak? ;P
March 24th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
I would love to participate to Ravelry. I am a fan, a knitter and do a little crochet too, I speak easily english and russian as well, I understand italian, spanish and german. I am French with Russian parents and husband, used to work in a big aeronautical firm. I am at home with 4 small children, 3 of them at school. Since I have children, it seems to me that life has to be taken day by day, with little progress and pleasure each day, and that only craftmen or women allow this to happen.
Anyway, I am sure a lot of ravelry members are qualified enough to fill in your needs. Thank you for this wonderful site, I spend very nice time looking at what others already did.

March 24th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
I’m crafty, I’m techie, and I totally just applied! Crossing my fingers I hear from you guys soon!
March 24th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
This is an incredible opportunity for my MOM. She sent a letter and her user name here on ravelry is terryg. She worked customer service for years and was in charge of all the internet customer services. Not only that she is an excellent knitter. She has taught me everything I own and has taught several of my friends as well. She is well read and KNOWS her yarn. She would be an excellent addition to your crew. I cannot recommend her enough. If you have any questions for me PLEASE, don’t hesitate to email!!
March 24th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
I only want to answer this question … humor me!
Quoting above:
“3) If you were a yarn-producing fiber, what would you be and why?”
I’d be silk– cuz I’m smooth! Ya.. lame, but I’m still laughing!
Good luck to everyone who applied!
March 24th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
And I could even go to Boston sometimes! so awesome
March 24th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
What a dream job! I love Ravelry, and I can’t get enough of crafting. I am good with computers and have been doing customer service for many years. I will be putting my application in tomorrow and hope that you all think I should be that very lucky somebody you are searching for.
March 25th, 2009 at 4:20 am
When I saw the job advertisement on Ravelry’s homepage I could hardly believe what my eye had seen…a Community Support position opened up at Ravelry…and non-US residents could candidate!
I have just submitted my application….I hope to hear from you veeeeery soon! …even better if it is for good news…you know what I mean! ;-)
March 25th, 2009 at 9:59 am
When will the notice be posted that the job was filled? Does anyone know???
March 25th, 2009 at 11:48 am
Wow! Hooray! I think I’ll be sending something in soon!
March 25th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Can’t you guys just decide early? I’m about to pop a sprocket with anticipation.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
With so many talented Ravelers out there, I’m sure the biggest problem will be choosing one of the many folks who apply!
I’m throwing my (knitted) hat into the ring too…
March 25th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
I just submitted my resume! I have web skills, graphic skills, and crafty skills, so I am crossing my fingers:)
March 25th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
I just submitted my resume as well. Now I’m waiting with fingers crossed. :)
Good luck Erica! You’ll be missed!
March 26th, 2009 at 6:38 am
I’m not applying (have my own job) but I wanted to say - what a terrific opportunity, particularly for a SAHM or someone who is disabled. I’m eager to hear who the lucky new Ravelry staffer is!
March 26th, 2009 at 6:39 am
Do you have to be a redhead?
March 26th, 2009 at 7:49 am
(waving hands in air) I am a red-head! And I’ve spent many years in public service, so I know how to work with all kinds of folks. Ever try to calm down someone with a basement full of, uh, failed septic-system stuff? I did - and succeeded.
I’m good with computers - both Macs (using one right now) and PCs - used one for years at work - and (this really dates me lol!) even Wangs. Created a tree inventory database for our Dept. of Transportation’s antiquated Wang. Then had to measure and enter every tree in the row in Montgomery County MD.
I love, love - LOVE knitting (my favorite) and crocheting and tatting and needlepointing and punch-hooking rugs and-and-and… now that I’m retired, I spend many hours working on my projects.
Won 6 blue ribbons last year at the County Fair for my handcrafts. (And 1 Grand Champion!) Also I’ve taught ladies around here to knit and also to tat.
Please let me work for Ravelry! I’d love to help others discover the same joy and peace and sanity in knitting and creating that I have had throughout my life (from 9 years old to today… and I’m [ulp!!] 60 this April.)
Thank you,
Dot Pecson

March 27th, 2009 at 12:16 am
Hiya- I emailed mine in yesterday but got the following error message:
“I’m afraid I wasn’t able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I’ve given up. Sorry it didn’t work out.
:
Sorry, I couldn’t find any host by that name. (#4.1.2)
I’m not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.”
I will try re-sending it, is there some sort of confirmation email for when it has been received?
March 27th, 2009 at 1:18 am
I’m crossing my fingers too! :)
March 27th, 2009 at 7:39 am
Me too - my fingers are crossed too! Good luck to everyone.
March 27th, 2009 at 8:18 am
After much deliberation, I just sent you an email and a resume! I’m very excited about this possibility. I’ve been freelancing on top of my full-time job and have really wanted to slowly shift into more part-time and freelance work. Here’s hoping!
March 27th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
“Pm’d you!” :)

March 28th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Well, I submitted my resume yesterday. I’ve been looking for a part-time position for awhile and this would be PERFECT!! I am so curious how many actually applied.

What’s the dude’s shirt say?
March 28th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
It says “Ruby makes me happy”, I assume as in Ruby the programming language, and not actual ruby stones.
It made me giggle. :-)

March 28th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
Is it too late to apply? I missed the deadline.
March 29th, 2009 at 1:33 am
Woohoo! I can’t wait to see how this pans out, whether that means me or someone else getting the job. I am sure the applicant pool is amazingly talented!
March 29th, 2009 at 7:17 am
Ditto, Diana. Good luck to everyone… May the Best Knitter/Computerator Win!
(But I DO hope it’s me! [grin] )
March 29th, 2009 at 8:15 am
The anticipation is killing me! Best of luck to all that applied!
March 30th, 2009 at 12:17 am
Hi.
Did anyone else get their response back from the ravelry help line? I just want to make sure my app went to the right locations!
March 30th, 2009 at 2:12 am
I need help and this is the only way I can send a message. If I reply to any of my messages I get from friends or even go to the hep section it will not let me leave a message. It just goes to the right of my page in a flash and is gone. Dear Pauline Bezette
I have an emergency (paralyzed dog) to take care of this morning… to the vet we go.
Then I will call you, soon as we get back. I’m in MD and will help you as best I can.
Sounds like you are totally frustrated over something. If nothing else, I can relay messages. Hey, in one of my past lives, I was a Telephone Cablewire. LOL
And if you find someone else to help first, please post it here?
Thanks, and looking forward to helping you work through whatever it is you need.

I was able to contact this lady (in Alaska!) and talked further about her problem. Then posted her problem on “For the Love of Ravelry” (as well as via the Help Desk) and got a response within 2 minutes!
So called her back, (Thank YOU urbansuburbia - You’re a HUGE help!) and told Pauline her issues had to do with glitches in the Internet Explorer 8 that she had downloaded and recommended she go back to Internet Explorer 6. Sounds like something a reasonably computer-literate high-schooler could do, maybe. So help should be available to her from there.
She was very appreciative. Just identifying the where the problem is and why the problem is made a huge difference to her.

And I searched out exactly what fits me in the utmost. Well, I have no idea of how to tell forex from casino gambling.
I’m a usual goofer, and I like to travel , and not to spoil (mar) eyes sitting in front of the computer.
Not long ago , I started a blog in which I would like to open some secrets of excavating money from the Internet .
