Ravelympics!

July 25th, 2008

Are you looking for a challenge? Do you have the urge to make something great while you connect with other Ravelry users around the world? Join your fellow crocheters and knitters in the Ravelympics 2008 group!

The Ravelympics (not to be confused with the Knitting Olympics, which take place every four years, just like any other Olympic sport, and will be orchestrated by the Yarn Harlot) are open to any knitter or crocheter on Ravelry ready to take on the challenge of completing a project (or projects) within 17 days during the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Ravelympics wasn’t our idea - the group was founded by MisWartbobble, and the group’s moderators, Kimberli, paksnarrion, Captain, knotbuilder, and ME215 have been doing an incredible job with organizing and motivating the group. Thanks to their enthusiasm, we have caught the Ravelympics fever, and are just as excited about Ravelympics as everyone else!

The Ravelympic Village is already huge (there are already over 3000 group members, with more joining each day!) and bustling with activity; if you are wondering where to get started, check out these handy links:

  • Start at the Ravelympics Overview page to get your bearings and find out more about the games.
  • The Sign-ups instruction sticky tells you what you need to know to get started!
  • Ravelympics Village HQ is the main link-directory to events, teams, and key threads in the Village. This is a good central spot to navigate the group when you don’t want to wade through pages and pages of threads on the main discussion board. :)
  • In the Daily Updates thread, the moderators post each day with new and notable information and links to key threads.
  • There are lots of teams to join already, but if you want to make a team with your Ravelry friends, the deadline for team creation is Sunday, July 27 (this Sunday)!

With the Master of Ceremonies, Adonis Dionysus Bobicus Maximus, presiding over the events, and Casey cooking up some special features (even more coming soon!) to connect all the participants, the 2008 Ravelympic Events are promising to be huge fun!

    Bobicus Maximus is SUPERAWESOME!

Can someone post the story of the giant segmented display of Adonis Dionysus Bobicus Maximus?

  5. Kashmir Knitter Says:

My household is boycotting the Olympics but since you don’t actually have to watch the Olympics to participate I can approve of the Ravelympics.

    Good luck everyone!

  6. Marjorie Says:

Isn’t Bob just the sweetest bit of cute overload you have ever set eyes upon!

  7. awkwardly Says:

yes! signed up and ready to go!

    sooper props to the founders!

  8. MissJubilee Says:

    All signed up.

Is that picture of Bob in the mall real, or photoshopped? Nice job, either way.

Technical question: A few preliminary football (soccer) games will be held on August 6 & 7. I’m going to two matches on the 6th. Can I cast on while I watch, since it’s part of the Olympics? No? Didn’t think so. Ah, well, with security as crazy as it is here (literally, I kid you not), they probably wouldn’t let my knitting needles in, anyway.

  9. Vis Major Says:

    Hahahaha, Bobicus Maximus!

  10. reikiknitter (beth) Says:

This is one of the many reasons I love Ravelry! You all are SO much fun! :)

  11. Carmen Says:

  12. Dancing Gardener Says:

All Hail, Adonis Dionysus Bobicus Maximus!

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit!

  13. LeslieEileen Says:

Oh gosh - I just LOVE (22billion) Bobicus Maximus - it’s almost enough to make me join but I think I’ll just follow along, knitting slowly in the heat and holding onto the hope Bobicus will visit those of us cheering in the stands.

  14. Ashley Says:

What a challenge for a lazy knitter like me, but I think I’ll take up the mantel. Huzzah of Ravelry Olympics!

And who could resist with a cutie like that for a mascot ;D

  15. Beverly Says:

I am so excited waiting for the Ravelympics to start! I want to give props to the amazing people who are organizing this enormous event in Ravelry. Thank you all!

  16. knitsibitsi Says:

What mall or building is the giant dog picture in?

  17. rachel Says:

Darn I’d love to but sadly law school starts Aug 18 and I have to spend my evenings for the next month reading instead :( Maybe a small project though…

  18. Kimberli Says:

Isn’t that the coolest Bob you’ve ever seen! We’re pretty proud of our Master of Ceremonies. As for the mall pic…must confess it done with a very cool tool at the Photofunia.com site. Doesn’t it look impressive!

Even if you don’t join come on over to see the fun!

  19. Paksenarrion Says:

All hail Kimberli, Official Chief Crazy Mod! She’s done an unbelievable job organizing and cheerleading the Ravelympics. If you’ve been over to the Ravelympics board, you know that she seems to be everywhere at once. The amazing growth of the Ravelympics is due to the response of Ravelers — at a rate we never anticipated! — and the leadership of folks like team captains, who have grabbed the ball, recruited participants, and created great spaces to hang out.

And thanks to Casey, who volunteered to do some special programming magic to make joining and sharing projects even easier. We’re so excited to see the FOs start streaming in … it’s going to be better than radar (if that’s not blasphemy)!

  20. Coral Says:

Wow, great job on the mall pic! I am in love with Bobicus Maximus. I am going to die of cuteness!

  21. octagonfudge Says:

Thanks for all the great comments about Bobicus! I had such a blast creating him. Glad to contribute!

  22. stringcat Says:

I love (1000000000000000) Bobicus Maximus! I can’t wait for the Ravelympics too. :)

  23. Lellie Says:

I love the Huge Bob picture! Do I foresee Bobicus Maximus tees in the near future?

  24. dannyKay Says:

I could swear the picture was taken in Berlin’s Hauptbahnhof (main train station)…

  25. Darksocks Says:

    I LOVE the banner

  26. Marion Wilhelm Says:

well.. Bob has wone the much-deserved gold, I see!

  27. Corrie Says:

OK that’s it, you’ve convinced me. I’m digging out my ziploc bag with the pink and green yarn and making the slippers for my daughter she’s been asking for! Stay tuned–my first pair of slippers!

  28. Tiffers Says:

Oh! I wish I logged in before the olympics and saw this! You can definitely count on me to participate next time.

I love the Huge Bob picture, too.

Ironically, I began an bright orange & black afghan during the opening ceremonies, but I know I can’t finish that in 17 days. I will cheer for team USA from my keyboard. :)

  29. Cyndy Says:

Bobicus Maximus is magnificent. My Aeowyn Sindaryn is giving him googoo eyes. You know how young ladies fawn over such handsom celebrities. I am in the midst of knitting a big baby blanket for my sister’s first grandchild so I will watch the Ravelympics from the sidelines this time. Good luck all, I’ll enter next time.

  30. Marion Wilhelm Says:

OMG! Bob is so buff! I am sure he will beat Phelps for the top gold!

  31. glalemilminy Says:

    well done, guy
