Ravelry stats
January 30th, 2008
People ask about our stats from time to time. January is nearly over, so I’ll share the January stats that we have so far (from Google analytics)

As for the number of unique visitors, we are most interested in counts of active users:
- Total # of registered users: 72,879
- # who used Ravelry within the last 7 days: 43,199
- # who used Ravelry within the last 5 days: 39,898
- # who used Ravelry within the last 2 days: 32,086
- # who used Ravelry within the last 24 hours: 25,833
edit Don’t worry guys! I think that the average time is diluted by all the unregistered people that can’t get past the front door - I’m sure that their visits are very short :) Check it out:

Some of us visit more than once a day!
January 30th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
I log in every am while at work.
I want to see a list of users who stay online the longest!
Thanks for the new info!
January 30th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
17 minutes is the average visit? I think I send more time in the forums. But it is great to see how much use the site is getting!
January 30th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
adverage time less than 17 minutes? well maybe but i visit several times a day
January 30th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
“I want to see a list of users who stay online the longest!” Ugh. I don’t.. :)
January 30th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
I’m on most of the day..I only get off long enough to eat and do more laundry.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Hi
What does the bounce rate illustrate?
January 30th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Yeah….what is Bounce Rate?
January 30th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
“I want to see a list of users who stay online the longest!” Ugh. I don’t.. :)
OK, but don’t tell my work if it’s me ;-)
January 30th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Let’s see… Google says…
“What does Bounce Rate mean?
Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page.”
not a very interesting bit of data for us…
January 30th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Wow, impressive stats. I think the really short visits skew the average time spent! I ama amazed at the number of users, but I know from the “front door”, it’s growing everyday! You guys have created something great, but I’m sure Bob already mentioned that. ;)
January 30th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
awesome and thank you for all the work you do.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Those poor, poor people who have yet to enter the hallowed ground… I remember the days when I obsessively checked the wait list checker…
January 30th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
love those stats!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Those short visits are those of us at work!!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Tell us noobies what “bounce rate” means, please!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
We is sticky!

i was going to say… i’d like to meet the people who can manage to get off of the ravelry website in under 20 minutes…
life around this house has adapted to the pull of ravelry. i’ve accepted that i’ll never eat al dente pasta again, or anything else that isn’t cooked to oblivion while i get lost in the forums…
January 30th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
i definitely fall in the 1801+ seconds visit length…gosh!
January 30th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
hi! i know that you two must be extremely busy people but i have just one thing to ask. is there anyway that you could take a few minutes and explain what a few of those things are? define page view and bounce rate specifically. the numbers look jsut awesome! i know i cannot jsut spend 17 minutes on here (unless i am at work!)! thank you so much for all that you two do!
January 30th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Gotta love Google Analytics!
I wish the stats for the website I maintain for my institution looked like this! Wow! This is impressive to say the least. Congratulations!
January 30th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
There’s a mistake I think: that Avg. Time on Site stat is in hours, right? :P
January 30th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
So if I leave Ravelry up and walk away, does it mess up the stats since I have a dsl connection? I”m really not on 12 hours a day. Honest. I have enough trouble finishing my projects as is!
January 30th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
So, does that mean everytime I log out just out of curiousity to check out how the Ravelry homepage looks for all those poor Yet To Be Ravelers, that I’m skewing the statistics! … and I too am guessing that “Avg Time On Site” has been mis-represented as mins when it should be hours.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
wow! look at how far you’ve come! i love that you’re a stats nerd too. when i was on the waiting list i would check like 4 times a day, and now that i have beta access i check it religiously with my email to the point where facebook got pushed way down there on the list of things to check. oivey.
January 31st, 2008 at 1:13 am
Congratulations on your great success!! I was not aware that the membership was over 70,000. WOW!! And I want to know who stays on Ravelry for ONLY 16 minutes???? That stat MUST be mistaken!
January 31st, 2008 at 2:25 am
Some of the 60 sec or less visits may be quick checks to see if there are any new messages and then off again.
I have done that when looking for a reply.
January 31st, 2008 at 6:26 am
WOW! Congrats! My favorite guessing game when I log on is to see how many Ravelers are online. I am so impressed with the ever increasing number. Thanks for such a wonderful site and trust me I lose myself for an hour easily every time I sit down and log on to Ravelry.
January 31st, 2008 at 6:38 am
I know that I spend a lot of time on Ravelry and it is my favorite site. I am so glad to be here! And thanks to Casey & Jess for all the hard work - this place is amazing!!
January 31st, 2008 at 7:14 am
You’ve hit the spot with this site. I visit frequently, everyday!
There are so many things to see, do and discover.
The only thing I’m wondering about is the total number of groups. Strange how people still flock together in such large numbers.
I’m glad I’m able to join this site/group and even maybe make a contribution in money and designs.
Thanx, Casey and Jess!
January 31st, 2008 at 7:41 am
I love this website…I use it everyday…so interesting, and informative.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:44 am
i come here everyday. my favorite page is my “friends activity” i never wonder off without seeing something to add to que or favorites or a new person to follow. daily inspiration : )
January 31st, 2008 at 8:52 am
Way Cool stats! I may just print this page to carry with me for when my non-knitting friends (and hubby) say that there aren’t THAT many knitters on the Internet, are there? Thanks for sharing with us!
January 31st, 2008 at 8:57 am
Thank you for listing time spent in seconds. It looks much shorter that way. I do not want to be faced with the time I actually spend here! (I translated; I know where I fit in!)
January 31st, 2008 at 10:03 am
I am SO glad to see that I’m not the only one hooked on this site….It is so easy to spend….uhhhhh - SHHHHH….hours here.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:34 am
I have learned so much in the three months since I received my invite. This is an amazing site. Thank you for establishing it.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:38 am
I’m hooked. And I’d be one of the ones who’s logged in for 1801+ seconds at a time. When I’m working at the LYS I stay logged in all day because I’m always using Ravelry to show people what others have done with the yarn we sell. It’s so helpful.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:42 am
I’m sure that the average time is also diluted by people like me, who stop by for around five minutes or so every hour or two, but don’t bother leaving the window open in the in-between times. ;)
January 31st, 2008 at 10:51 am
You two should be so very proud of yourselves. I love Ravelry. I’m not sure I ever actually logout. Sorry. I forget to actually click that when I’m done. I visit A LOT throughout the course of the day. The novelty has not worn off, so I don’t think it will. You have offered a great website to build community on the Internet.
January 31st, 2008 at 11:00 am
Wow!! I don’t think I even know HOW to stay on the website for less than 17 minutes!!! Thanks for Ravelry - it’s really opened up my knitting horizons.
January 31st, 2008 at 12:14 pm
I love to read statistics like that! Keep ‘em coming! Thanks.
January 31st, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Thanks for posting the stats, Casey. I am always interested in stuff like that.
Just curious…do you have stats on what goes on inside Ravelry? What areas are growing the fastest? Which ones are the biggest? That kinda thing…
January 31st, 2008 at 1:33 pm
sometimes i forget to log off. i come back a day later and its like… oh, i’m still here. now, i may not be the only one:) so are you adjusting for this possibility too? just curious.
January 31st, 2008 at 2:37 pm
My visits are being measured by seconds? How frightening! I would measure them by hours.
January 31st, 2008 at 3:31 pm
In my pre-mommy days I was a Chief Tech. Officer and those stats are golden! Pat yourself on the back and let me know when you are looking for investors.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:11 pm
The stats are so interesting! Thanks for putting them up!
January 31st, 2008 at 10:52 pm
The stats are very interesting, but wait is this a trick? They are all in seconds I need a converter to hours and minutes. Just kidding! I know who many hours I have spent on site the last few weeks. Love it.
February 1st, 2008 at 6:55 am
Just had to say thanks for all that you do. Great Job! (And I know I spend more than 16 minutes a day on here)
February 1st, 2008 at 9:32 am
16 minutes?? Who can only be on this site for 16 mins?? LOL! This is outstanding - Casey and Frecklegirl you two are amazing! thank you thank you thank you for this site.
Thanks for posting the stats - I find it fascinating. Please keep up the fantastic work you’re doing!
Hugs,
Tory

I’ve just done some basic stats involving cutting off anyone who is on the site less than 30s. If you cut those people off, and with some other assumptions, the average time becomes 21 minutes and 35 seconds. I think any website would be pretty pleased with that
James
* For each category, I assumed that all of those people stayed for the “middle” length of time. For the longest time category, I assumed an average time of one hour. I know it’s probably longer, and this would raise the average time even more!
February 1st, 2008 at 12:05 pm
I agree with you about the diluted times. And if there is ever a prize for “who is on Ravelry the longest,” I fear I would win!
February 1st, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Internet Marketers would kill for such a low bounce rate! Good job!
February 1st, 2008 at 12:48 pm
What’s a bounce rate?
February 1st, 2008 at 12:51 pm
oops - sorry - should have read up above.
February 1st, 2008 at 1:45 pm
“Holy Craft, Batman!”
February 4th, 2008 at 4:28 am
casey is brilliant.
February 4th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
That’s amazing! Your hard work really shows.
I’m curious, how many VC’s are calling you guys every day? You’re a dream come true for them.
February 5th, 2008 at 12:55 am
How in the world can someone get on this site and only stay 16 min.?????? I am at least an hour - think of all the eye candy you would miss out on in only 16 min. Do we know who these people are? Can we help them see the light?
Namaste,
Deborah
February 5th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
I spend WAY too much time. My queue is growing as fast as my stash is. One of these days I am going to have to become a stay at home knitter.
February 6th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Have you considered putting the front page as a different “site” on Google Analytics, and then excluding the front page from the current “site” - that would exclude the non-registered visitors from the general stats, but it would also give you a good idea of the profile of the front page by itself, including the traffic you are receiving from non-registered visitors.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
I have to say that sometimes i pop on real quick to check my messages or if to see if someone has responded to a forum question. That might also skew the numbers.
